Ever find a box full of ancient IDE hard drives in a corner of your office? One reason I haven't bothered scraping these drives is all the muss and fuss incurred with cabling them into a case and booting, etc. Recently nd I got a deal on a USB <-> IDE converter. This makes the operation an entirely bootless and external process.
